# Chandra Mantra: 11,000 Repetitions and a Window That Moves

> Eleven thousand repetitions, and the only graha in the nine whose own cycle is short enough to notice: the Moon returns to its birth position every 27.3 days.

The Chandra mantra asks for 11,000 repetitions. That is 101 complete malas with 92 beads left over, and across a forty day mandala it comes to 2.55 malas a day, roughly 11.5 minutes.

It sits fourth lightest of the nine. The Sun asks 7,000, Mercury 9,000, Mars 10,000, and then the Moon, before the counts step up sharply to Venus at 16,000 and beyond.

## The one graha whose own clock is short enough to use

Every other graha in this set moves too slowly for its cycle to be a scheduling tool. Saturn takes 29 and a half years to go round. Jupiter takes twelve. The Moon changes sign every 2.28 days on average, and a return to the exact natal degree takes 27.3.

That makes the Moon the only monthly instrument in the nine. A forty day mandala contains roughly one and a half lunar returns, which is a coincidence rather than a design, but it does mean that anyone doing forty days of Chandra japa passes their own natal Moon position at least once during it.

The Moon also produces the fastest-moving of all the panchang limbs. The nakshatra it occupies changes about every 24 hours 14 minutes on average, and tithi, yoga and karana are all functions of the Moon's position relative to the Sun. Four of the five limbs are arithmetic on the same two numbers, and the Moon is in all four.

## Monday, and the windows

Monday belongs to the Moon, so on a Monday the first hora of the day opens at sunrise and belongs to Chandra without any lookup. Its four windows fall at hora positions 1, 8, 15 and 22, as every graha's do on its own day, two in daylight and two at night.

On 6 January 2026 at Delhi they open at 07:15, 13:18, 19:54 and 03:51 the following morning, running 52, 52, 68 and 68 minutes. By late December of the same year they have shifted to 07:14, 13:14, 19:49 and 03:48, with the day horas down to 52 minutes and the night horas up to 68.

The total is 240 minutes either way. It is always 240 minutes, because two day horas and two night horas make a sixth of the daylight plus a sixth of the night, and that is a sixth of a full day whatever the split. We ran every day of 2026 at Delhi and it never once deviated.

## How much the window actually moves

More than most instructions admit. Delhi daylight runs from 10.283 hours in December to 13.930 in June, so a day hora stretches from 51.42 to 69.65 minutes and the fraction of your four hours that falls in daylight swings between 42.85% and 58.04%.

In practical terms, a Monday morning window that opened at 07:16 in January opens closer to 05:25 in June. Setting a fixed alarm and calling it the Moon's hora will be wrong for most of the year. ## Waxing, bright, and the difference between them

If you are addressing the Moon it is useful to know what condition yours is in, and the standard shorthand is wrong in a way that is easy to fix.

Waxing and bright are not the same condition. Counting the Sun's position from the Moon, the 8th through 12th houses leave the Moon waxing and the 2nd through 6th waning. Brightness runs on elongation instead, so a Moon is more than half lit when the Sun sits in the 5th through 10th from it.

Overlap those and only the 8th, 9th and 10th give a Moon that is both waxing and bright. The 5th, 6th and 7th give a waning Moon that is nonetheless brighter than any waxing one. Paksha bala, the strength term that is supposed to measure this, runs on elongation, so it is measuring brightness rather than direction.

## Eleven thousand across a month that keeps moving

The mandala arithmetic first: 11,000 over forty days is 275 repetitions daily, 2.55 malas, about 11.5 minutes. Against a ten year mahadasha that is 1,100 a year, near the middle of a range running from Mercury's 529 up to Ketu's 2,429.

The count does not divide by 108, as none of the nine do, so finishing on whole rounds means 102 malas and 11,016 repetitions. A sixteen repetition overshoot is among the smaller ones; Saturn's is 4 and Mercury's 72.

Where the Moon is unlike every other graha here is that forty days is long against its own cycle rather than short. Saturn barely moves in six weeks and Jupiter shifts a few degrees. The Moon completes about one and a half circuits of the whole zodiac, so a Chandra mandala is the only one of the nine that contains more than one full return of its own graha. Whatever else that means, it makes the practice and the planet operate on comparable timescales, which is not true anywhere else in this set.

## The pearl has a rule; this does not

The  [pearl](https://mahadasha.com/pearl-gemstone)  is licensed for exactly three ascendants, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, the water trine, and refused for Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius where the Moon owns the 12th, 8th and 6th. Aquarius rising is the awkward one, since moti is prescribed for emotional steadiness more than for anything else and there it feeds the 6th lord.

The Chandra mantra has no such restriction. Propitiation is not directional, so an Aquarius ascendant chants it exactly as a Cancer ascendant does. If the stone came back refused, nothing here is closed to you.

## Monday fasting, and one detail worth getting right

The traditional Monday fast for the Moon is kept until moonrise rather than until sunset, which is a genuine difference and not a technicality. Moonrise moves by roughly fifty minutes a day across the lunar month, so the fast's end time is a different quantity every week.

Charity in the Moon's items, rice and milk and white cloth, sits in the same propitiatory category as the mantra, and so does the 2 mukhi rudraksha, which takes the Moon's position in the bead sequence. None of it depends on the licensing table.

If what is actually bothering you is a lack of support around the Moon rather than the Moon itself, check whether the flanking houses are empty. ## One reason the Moon gets more remedial attention than it should

The Moon is the graha people reach for when the complaint is emotional, and it is also the one whose condition changes fastest, which makes before-and-after judgements unreliable in a way they are not for Saturn.

Consider the arithmetic. Over a forty day mandala the Moon crosses every sign of the zodiac roughly one and a half times, changes nakshatra about forty times, and passes through every phase from new to full and back. Any change in mood across those forty days has a large number of candidate causes and the japa is only one of them.

That is not an argument against doing it. It is an argument for not treating a good week as evidence, which is the trap this particular graha sets more than any of the other eight.
