Per year of dasha it is the lightest ask of the nine, and Wednesday has an oddity of its own. The Budh mantra asks for 9,000 repetitions, the second smallest count of the nine after the Sun's 7,000. That is 83 whole malas with 36 beads left over, and over a forty day mandala it comes to 2.08 malas a day, about 9.4 minutes. What makes Mercury unusual is not the count. It is what happens when you divide the count by the period. ## The lightest rate in the entire table Mercury runs a seventeen year mahadasha, second only to Venus's twenty. Pair a 9,000 count with seventeen years and you get 529 repetitions per year of period, which is the smallest figure anywhere in the nine. Ketu is at the other end with 2,429, asking 17,000 against a seven year period. The ratio between them is 4.59, so whatever principle set these counts, proportionality to dasha length was not it. Rahu is the only graha where the count in thousands equals the years, at 18,000 against 18. Read practically, this means a Mercury mahadasha is the one period where the classical remedial load is lightest relative to how long you are in it. Seventeen years, and the prescribed japa would occupy about six hours of them in total. ## Wednesday, and the day with a missing window Wednesday belongs to Mercury, so its first hora opens at sunrise and the four Budh windows fall at hora positions 1, 8, 15 and 22 of the 24, which is where a graha's own horas always land on its own weekday. On 1 January 2026 at Delhi they open at 07:15, 13:16, 19:51 and 03:49 the next morning. We checked those positions against the hora engine this site runs and it returns exactly 1, 8, 15 and 22, with Mercury as the lord of the first. One midday caveat, and it has nothing to do with Mercury. [Abhijit](https://mahadasha.com/abhijit-muhurat) , the auspicious window that sits on solar noon, is crossed out on Wednesdays and on no other weekday. So the one slot most people would reach for by default is the one slot a Wednesday does not offer. The hora windows above are untouched by that, since they come from a different division of the day. Budha never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. That is an orbital constraint, not a chart feature, and it means the Sun is always in the house before Mercury, the same house, or the house after, and nowhere else. Whole-sign gaps between the two are only ever 0, 1 or 11. Integrating real orbits over 120 years, the Sun and Mercury share a sign 51.2% of the time, and 61.0% of those cases are inside the 14 degree combustion orb. So Budhaditya Yoga, which everyone wants, is formed by a combust Mercury about three times in five. The placement people celebrate and the affliction people fear are usually the same placement described twice. Mercury is combust roughly 40.5% of the time overall and retrograde 19.2%, and 58.4% of its retrograde time is also combust, because both conditions describe the same part of the orbit. Retrogression narrows the combustion orb to 12 degrees rather than widening it, which surprises most people. ## Open to the three ascendants the emerald turns away The [emerald](https://mahadasha.com/emerald-gemstone) clears three rising signs and is turned down for three more, where Mercury holds a difficult house with no trine beside it. The sharpest of those refusals is Scorpio, since panna gets sold for clear thinking and there it feeds the 8th lord instead. The Budh mantra carries no such test. Propitiation is not directional, so a Scorpio ascendant chants it exactly as a Virgo one does. ## Fitting 9.4 minutes into a real Wednesday Nine thousand across forty days is 225 repetitions a day, which is 2.08 malas. The four Mercury windows on a Wednesday total 240 minutes, and the same is true on every other day of the year, because two day horas plus two night horas always come to a sixth of a full day whatever the season does to the split. The one thing that will not hold still is the clock. Sunrise at Delhi swings across nearly two hours between the solstices, from a shortest day of 10.283 hours to a longest of 13.930, so a window that opened at 07:15 in January opens closer to 05:25 in June. Mercury is the only graha exalted in a sign it already owns, since Virgo is both its own sign and its exaltation. Every other graha has those two in different places. And Mercury can never be a yogakaraka, for a reason of pure spacing that the [4 mukhi](https://mahadasha.com/4-mukhi-rudraksha) page works through. The short version is that its two signs sit at the one distance apart that cannot put an angle and a trine in the same hands. A third consequence rarely gets mentioned and it changes how a quarter of charts read, so it has a section of its own on the bead page. ## Mercury and the 4th and 10th houses Budha is the significator of education and of profession, which puts it in the significator trap for exactly two houses: the 4th, which carries formal education, and the 10th, which carries career. How hard karako bhavo nashti bites depends on how many other significators the house has. The 4th shares its brief with the Moon, so Mercury there takes the rule with some force. The 10th has four karakas between the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn, and with the load spread that thin the principle barely registers. So the same rule produces a visible effect in one house and almost none in the other, which is a useful check on anyone applying it flatly. One more piece of fixed geometry, mentioned because no practice alters it: whichever sign is rising, the gap between Mercury's two houses never changes. It cannot, since the signs themselves are a fixed distance apart, and that same distance is what keeps Budha out of the top classification. ## The mantra and the associated text The beej form is ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः, Om Bram Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah. The presiding deity in the common attribution is Vishnu, and the longer text named alongside it is the Vishnu Sahasranama, which is recited rather than counted. The 4 mukhi rudraksha carries Mercury in the bead sequence, at position four because Mercury is the fourth of the navagraha, and it takes Wednesday for the same reason.
