The licensing question is simpler than the folklore and it has a fixed answer. A blue sapphire gemstone, neelam, is the one people are afraid of. It has a body of folklore no other stone carries: that it works within days or not at all, that it must be tested on a trial period, that it either transforms a life or wrecks one. Strip the drama away and Saturn's stone follows exactly the same rule as the other six. It is licensed for three ascendants, refused for three, disputed for three and neutral for three. The reputation is about Saturn. The licensing is arithmetic. ## Who the blue sapphire gemstone is for Taurus, Libra and Capricorn rising, and the first two get the strongest classification the system produces. - **Taurus rising:** Saturn owns the 9th (Capricorn) and the 10th (Aquarius). A trine and the strongest angle together, so Saturn is a yogakaraka. - **Libra rising:** Saturn owns the 4th and the 5th. Angle and trine again, yogakaraka again. - **Capricorn rising:** Saturn owns the 1st and the 2nd. Licensed through the ascendant, and a maraka through the 2nd. Taurus and Libra are Venus's two signs. So the ascendants where the hardest planet in the sky carries the best possible licence are the two ruled by the softest one, and on those same two ascendants Jupiter, the great benefic, is refused. Whatever the system is organised around, it is not planetary temperament. ## Who should not wear it Cancer, Leo and Pisces rising. Saturn owns the 7th and 8th for Cancer, the 6th and 7th for Leo, and the 11th and 12th for Pisces. Leo is the case our own software used to get wrong every time. Saturn there owns the 6th and the 7th and no trine at all, which makes it a functional malefic. Before we fixed it, our report engine recommended a stone for whichever mahadasha was running, so any Leo ascendant in a Saturn period was handed a neelam recommendation with no reference to the ascendant whatsoever. What made that worse is that a different file in the same codebase already carried the warning. Our Sade Sati module has said for months that blue sapphire amplifies Saturn rather than pacifying it and can make matters worse on a weak natal Saturn. One half of the software knew and the other half did not ask. ## The disputed three, and the neutral three Gemini, Virgo and Aquarius are the three where Saturn owns a trine and a difficult house at once. Gemini rising gives it the 8th and the 9th, Virgo the 5th and the 6th, Aquarius the 1st and the 12th. Aquarius is the sharpest of those. Saturn is the ascendant lord and a 12th lord simultaneously, which is the same shape of argument as Mars for Aries rising and Venus for Libra rising. One position holds that an ascendant lord is never functionally malefic whatever else it owns, because the 1st house is the native. The other holds that the 12th is the 12th. The texts do not settle it and neither will we. Aries and Scorpio rising leave Saturn neutral, on the 10th and 11th and the 3rd and 4th respectively. Sagittarius gets the 2nd and 3rd, also neutral. Those three are the cases where the stone is neither indicated nor contraindicated and the decision rests entirely on whether Saturn is strong enough to be worth amplifying. ## The trial period, and what it is actually testing The folk instruction is to wear neelam for a few days before committing, and to stop if anything goes wrong. It is the only stone that routinely comes with this advice. Read as a claim about gems it is unfalsifiable, since a few days of an ordinary life will contain some good and some bad whatever you are wearing. Read as a piece of practitioner caution it makes more sense: it is an admission that the recommendation is being made without enough information, and that the person making it knows the odds are not good. If a stone is picked by mahadasha lord alone, the way our engine did it and the way a great deal of casual advice does, the pick is a functional malefic 19.82% of the time and lands on a genuinely licensed stone only 19.35% of the time. A trial period is what you need when four times in five you do not know. The alternative is to spend two minutes on the ascendant. It is one field, and it settles the question completely. ## Saturn's own condition is a separate reading Shani is exalted in Libra and falls in Aries. It runs the longest mahadasha of the nine at 19 years and is said to mature at 36, later than any other graha. Sade Sati is the reading most people actually arrive with, and it is worth correcting one thing about it here: it is not seven and a half years. Measured properly by Saturn's real motion it runs from 6.94 years for a Gemini Moon to 8.49 for a Sagittarius Moon, a spread of more than eighteen months, and the shortest and longest Moon signs sit exactly opposite each other. A Leo ascendant in Sade Sati still owns the 6th and 7th through Saturn, and the stone is still the wrong instrument. ## Iron, silver, and Saturn's own day Our table carries a blue sapphire at 4 to 7 carats, set in silver or iron, worn on the middle finger, started on a Saturday. Iron is Saturn's metal in the traditional correspondences, which makes this one of the few prescriptions where the setting and the stone point at the same graha rather than mixing two.
