# 9 Mukhi Rudraksha: Ketu, and the Last Bead That Follows Order

> Nine beads, nine grahas, and then the sequence runs out. Everything after this one is deity attribution with the planets fitted in afterwards.

A 9 mukhi rudraksha belongs to Ketu, the ninth of the navagraha, and it is the last bead in the sequence where the numbering still does what it has been doing.

From bead 1 to bead 9 the rule is exact: mukhi number equals graha position. Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu. Nine beads, nine grahas, no exceptions and no interpretation required.

At bead 10 it stops, because the list has run out of planets.

## What happens after this bead

The remaining five are attributed deity-first, and the planets are fitted in afterwards where they fit at all.

Bead 10 is Vishnu and carries no graha. Bead 11 is the Ekadasha Rudra, the eleven Rudras, and carries no graha either. Bead 12 returns to the Sun through the twelve Adityas. Bead 13 is Kamadeva, usually read as Venus though some lists name Indra. Bead 14 is Hanuman, usually read as Saturn though Mars is a common alternative.

So of the fourteen, twelve carry a graha and nine grahas share them out. Three grahas must therefore appear twice, and the counting forces it whichever variant list a source works from. In the common mapping the doubled three are the Sun, Venus and Saturn.

That is why bead 9 is worth marking. It is the boundary between the part of the scheme that is an index and the part that is a collection of attributions.

## Ketu has no weekday, and the reason is the same as Rahu's

Beads 1 to 7 take their days straight from the graha ordering, Sunday through Saturday, because the seven day week is itself built out of the first seven grahas in the same sequence. Beads 8 and 9 have no day to inherit, since the nodes own no planetary hour.

Our gemstone table hands both node stones a Saturday on loan from Saturn, and gives them matching instructions down to the finger, the metal and the weight range. Two of nine entries agreeing on every field is what you would expect if those fields were filled in by analogy rather than worked out.

## The stone rule cannot reach Ketu at all

Same structural gap as Rahu's, and the same consequence.

Ketu owns no sign, so it owns no houses, so the lordship test that licenses seven of the nine stones has nothing to evaluate. [Lehsunia](https://mahadasha.com/lehsunia-gemstone) is not licensed for any ascendant and not refused for any ascendant. Twelve blanks.

An ordinal needs no ownership, so bead 9 reaches Ketu cleanly where the stone rule cannot. The [Ketu mantra](https://mahadasha.com/ketu-mantra) is unrestricted for the same reason, and it carries the steepest count-to-period ratio in the whole table: 17,000 repetitions against a 7 year mahadasha works out at 2,429 a year, against Mercury's 529 at the other end.

## Nine, and the two other nines in the system

Since this is where the ordinal ends, the number is worth a look. Nine appears three times in this system and the three are not the same nine.

There are nine grahas, which is what this bead sequence counts. There are nine planetary periods in the Vimshottari cycle, one per graha, which is the same nine wearing a different hat. And there are nine parts to a navamsa, the D9 division, which is a different nine entirely: it counts subdivisions of a sign, not planets.

The third is worth separating out because the coincidence invites a connection that is not there. A navamsa is one ninth of a sign, 3 degrees 20 minutes, and there are 108 of them in the zodiac, which is also the bead count of a mala. That is the kind of numerical rhyme this subject is full of, and it is a rhyme rather than a derivation. The [navamsa chart](https://mahadasha.com/navamsa-chart-d9) has nothing to do with bead counting.

## Where Ketu is genuinely readable

Occupancy and timing, which is what the nodes support.

Ketu is always exactly six houses from Rahu, in every chart, because the two are the opposite crossing points of the Moon's orbit with the ecliptic and are 180 degrees apart by construction. So the axis is one piece of information rather than two, and any reading that treats them as independent has counted the same fact twice.

The axis takes roughly eighteen months to cross a sign. Measured over a long window, a node influences a given house about 8.2 times per 75 years for an average of 566 days at a time, which sits between Jupiter's 25.1 visits of 435 days and Saturn's 10.5 of 982.

The node axis is also what defines [Kaal Sarp](https://mahadasha.com/kaal-sarp-dosha) , the configuration where every other graha falls on one side of it. That is a statement about occupancy, which is the kind the nodes support, rather than about ownership, which is the kind they cannot.

## How much of a life a node period takes

Ketu's mahadasha is 7 years, tied with Mars for the shortest of the nine, and it arrives once in the 120 year cycle if it arrives at all.

Two figures put that in scale. You live through about 6.56 of the nine mahadashas by 75, so roughly a quarter of the cycle never reaches you. And the nodes between them hold 20.83% of the cycle, measured at 22.43% of a typical life when sampled across 12,000 births at a random age.

There is a theorem underneath the sub-periods that is useful to know too. Within any mahadasha, each antardasha takes the same share of it that the lord's own period takes of 120. That makes the mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord exactly independent, so the share of a lifetime running a Ketu period comes out the same whichever level you ask about. It also means Ketu's antardasha inside its own mahadasha is one of the shortest windows the system produces at that level.

## Durga, and the deity layer

The 9 mukhi is attributed to Durga in the common list, sometimes to Bhairava, and the nine faces are read against the nine nights of Navaratri. That is deity-layer reasoning and it is worth keeping separate from the ordinal.

The two layers coincide at bead 2, where Ardhanarishvara is a form made of two, and at bead 6, where Kartikeya has six faces. They diverge most visibly at bead 7, which sits at Saturn's position under Mahalakshmi. Here the nine-fold reading and the ninth-graha reading agree in number without either being derived from the other.

For a start date, the [rudraksha muhurat](https://mahadasha.com/muhurat-calculator/rudraksha) tool applies both the calendar screen and the personal one, which together leave rather fewer days than people expect.

## What a node period is like to be inside

One figure worth carrying, because it cuts against the way node periods are usually described.

Any rule phrased as "run the dasha of the lord of house N" is undefined rather than merely unmet for 20.83% of the Vimshottari cycle, because that is the share the two nodes hold and neither owns a house. It bites hardest on the questions where Rahu is the natural significator, business and foreign settlement in particular, since Rahu is the karaka and cannot be a house lord at the same time.

So a good deal of standard timing advice quietly has no referent for a fifth of any life. That is not a reason to distrust the dasha system, which is measuring something real. It is a reason to notice when a rule has stopped applying rather than assuming it has been satisfied.

## Frequently asked questions about the 9 mukhi rudraksha

### Which planet does the 9 mukhi rudraksha belong to?

Ketu, the ninth of the navagraha. It is the last bead where the mukhi number and the graha position still coincide; from bead 10 onward the attributions are deity-first.

### Why does the pattern stop after this bead?

Because there are only nine grahas and the list runs out. Beads 10 and 11 carry no planet at all, and beads 12 to 14 return to grahas that already have one, which forces at least three grahas to appear twice.

### Is it better than cat's eye for Ketu?

On grounds of evidence, yes. Ketu owns no sign, so no ascendant licenses or refuses lehsunia and the classical derivation is simply unavailable. The bead reaches Ketu through an ordinal, which needs no ownership.

### Which day should it be worn?

None, and there cannot be one: the week has seven days because seven grahas own planetary hours, and Ketu is not among them. What you will be offered is Saturday on loan from Saturn, which is the same loan the cat's eye entry takes in our gemstone table.

### What is the Durga association?

The deity attribution, read against the nine nights of Navaratri. It agrees with the ordinal in number without being derived from it, which is the same kind of coincidence as bead 2 and bead 6.
