A 7 mukhi rudraksha sits at Saturn's position in the sequence, because Saturn is the seventh of the navagraha. It is also attributed to Mahalakshmi, goddess of wealth and abundance. Those two things do not fit together, and the mismatch is the most useful thing on this page. ## Two systems, and here they come apart Through the first six positions the scheme reads like one coherent tradition. Ardhanarishvara at bead 2 is a figure made of two halves. Kartikeya at bead 6 has six heads. Twice in a row the deity seems to be confirming the face count, and it is easy to conclude that the numbers and the names are one system. At bead 7 they stop. Saturn is the graha of constraint, delay, discipline and long labour. Mahalakshmi is the goddess of abundance. Nothing in either reading produces the other, and there is no seven-fold feature of Mahalakshmi to match the face count. What is actually happening is that two independent layers run through this subject. The planetary layer is an ordinal: bead n is graha n, exactly, for n from 1 to 9. The deity layer is Puranic attribution and continues past 9 to 14 and beyond. They coincide at bead 2 and bead 6 by coincidence, and elsewhere they simply differ. Bead 3 is Mars and Agni, with nothing three-fold about Agni. Beads 10 and 11 carry no graha at all. Once you have seen bead 7, the rest of the divergence is easy to spot. ## The last bead where the weekday still works Saturday belongs to Saturn, and it is bead 7's day. That is the end of the run: the week has seven days built from the seven grahas that own planetary hours, and beads 8 and 9 belong to Rahu and Ketu, which own no hora and therefore have no weekday of their own. So the tidy correspondence between bead number and weekday, running Sunday to Saturday for beads 1 to 7, terminates here for a structural reason rather than an arbitrary one. Saturn's four own horas on a Saturday fall at positions 1, 8, 15 and 22 of the 24, opening with sunrise. On 4 January 2026 at Delhi they open at 07:15, 13:17, 19:53 and 03:50 the next morning. The total is exactly 240 minutes, as it is on every day of the year for every graha on its own weekday. ## Saturn's stone is the one this site warns about The contrast between bead and stone is at its sharpest here. The bead carries no such risk because it makes no such request. Taurus rising puts Saturn on the 9th and the 10th. Libra rising puts it on the 4th and the 5th. An angle and a trine in both cases, which is the strongest classification the system produces and one only Mars, Venus and Saturn ever reach. Taurus and Libra are Venus's two signs, and on those same two ascendants Jupiter, the great benefic, is a functional malefic and the yellow sapphire is refused. So the ascendants where the hardest graha carries the best licence are exactly the ones where the gentlest is turned away. Whatever this system is organised around, it is not planetary temperament. Saturn qualifies through adjacency: Capricorn and Aquarius sit next to each other, and one sign apart is one of the three spacings that can put an angle and a trine in the same hands. ## Saturn moves slowly, which changes what a remedy can be judged against Something worth saying about this graha in particular. Saturn takes 29 and a half years to circle the zodiac and roughly two and a half years to cross a single sign, so within any forty day observance it moves a couple of degrees at most. Compare the Moon, which completes about one and a half full circuits in the same forty days. A Chandra practice and the Moon's own cycle run on comparable timescales; a Shani practice and Saturn's do not, by a factor of several hundred. The practical consequence is that nothing measurable about Saturn's position will have changed by the end of a mandala. Whatever a Saturn remedy is doing, it is not doing it by moving the graha, and a change noticed over six weeks has to be attributed to something else. The seven and a half year figure is an average nobody actually gets. Run it against Saturn's real motion and the range opens to more than eighteen months, with a Gemini Moon at the short end and a Sagittarius Moon at the long one. Those two signs are exactly opposite, which is the giveaway that the cause is orbital rather than anything about the signs themselves. Both figures point the same way: whatever Saturn is doing, it is not doing it quickly. Its dignities sit at the far ends of the zodiac from each other, exalted in Libra and fallen in Aries, and it owns Capricorn and Aquarius as an adjacent pair. That adjacency is what lets it reach yogakaraka status, since one sign apart is one of the three spacings that put an angle and a trine in the same hands. Capricorn rising hands it the 1st and the 2nd at once, so the same graha is the native's own lord and one of the two the tradition associates with the end of life.
