# 4 Mukhi Rudraksha: Mercury, the Least Refused Graha

> Mercury is the graha most often burnt by the Sun and the one whose stone is most often mis-sold, which makes the unrestricted bead unusually useful here.

A 4 mukhi rudraksha belongs to Mercury, at position four because Mercury is the fourth of the navagraha. The sequence runs Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, and the mukhi number tracks it exactly for the first nine.

Wednesday is the day, for the same reason: the week is built from those same seven grahas in the same order, so bead four takes the fourth weekday.

## Mercury is the graha most often in trouble

This matters here because it decides when a Mercury remedy has anything to do.

Budha never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. That is an orbital constraint rather than a chart feature, and it means the Sun is always in the house before Mercury, the same house, or the house after, and nowhere else. Whole-sign gaps between them are only ever 0, 1 or 11.

The consequence is that Mercury spends about 40.5% of its time inside the Sun's burning orb, which is more than any other graha manages, and that  [Budhaditya Yoga](https://mahadasha.com/budhaditya-yoga)  is formed by a combust Mercury about three times in five. The combination people hope for and the affliction they fear are usually one placement seen from two angles. ## Why the bead is more useful here than the stone

Take the  [emerald](https://mahadasha.com/emerald-gemstone) . Three rising signs are cleared for it and three are turned away, the second group being those where Mercury holds one of the difficult houses without a trine alongside.

Scorpio is the case that stings. Mercury owns the 8th house there, and panna is prescribed for clear thinking, study and business more than for anything else, so a Scorpio ascendant asking for a clearer head is handed a stone that feeds their 8th lord.

Three more ascendants, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius, land in genuinely disputed territory where Mercury owns a trine and a difficult house at once. That leaves only three of the twelve where the emerald is straightforwardly indicated.

The bead has none of that structure. No ascendant licenses it and none refuses it, because an ordinal position does not require ownership. Neither does the  [Budh mantra](https://mahadasha.com/budh-mantra) , which asks 9,000 repetitions, the second lightest count of the nine.

## Two structural facts about Mercury worth carrying

Mercury is the only graha exalted in a sign it already owns, since Virgo is both. Every other graha has its own sign and its exaltation in different places, which means for every other graha there are two distinct ascendants that produce the two dignities. For Mercury they collapse into one.

And Mercury can never be a yogakaraka for any ascendant. Gemini and Virgo sit three signs apart, and to own an angle and a trine at once, excluding the 1st house, a graha's signs must be one, two or five apart. Jupiter is disqualified by identical arithmetic, while Mars, Venus and Saturn each manage it for two ascendants. The two grahas most often described as benefic are the two locked out of the strongest classification.

## Brahma, and one thing about Wednesday

The 4 mukhi is attributed to Brahma, with the standard claim concerning learning and articulation. That is a deity-layer association, distinct from the planetary one, and the two layers only sometimes coincide.

Wednesday itself has a quirk worth knowing if you are planning a start date. Abhijit, the auspicious midday muhurta, is the eighth of the fifteen day divisions. On Wednesday the inauspicious Dur Muhurtam consists of exactly that eighth division and nothing else, so  [Abhijit is unavailable on Wednesdays](https://mahadasha.com/abhijit-muhurat)  and only on Wednesdays. Tuesday and Saturday also include the eighth division but pair it with another.

None of that reaches the hora windows, which come from a different division entirely. Wednesday's first opens at sunrise and the four together always come to 240 minutes, as they do for any graha on its own day.

Worth keeping the two divisions apart, since they are easy to confuse. The muhurta scheme cuts the daylight into fifteen parts and Abhijit is the eighth of them, centred on solar noon to the second rather than on clock noon. At Delhi solar noon falls between 7 and 31 minutes after twelve depending on the date, and the Abhijit window itself runs 41 to 56 minutes rather than a fixed 48. The hora scheme cuts the daylight into twelve parts and the night into twelve more. Different divisors, different windows, and only one of them is crossed out on a Wednesday.

## What the bead does not fix

Worth stating, because Mercury attracts a particular kind of over-claim.

Gemini and Virgo sit three signs apart in the zodiac, which fixes the houses Mercury rules at a constant separation for every possible ascendant. That constant is what disqualifies Budha from yogakaraka status, since an angle and a trine never sit that far from one another once the 1st house is set aside. It is geometry, and no remedy of any kind reaches it.

The significator principle applies to Mercury for exactly two houses: the 4th, which carries formal education, and the 10th, which carries profession. How hard it bites depends on how many co-karakas the house has. The 4th shares its brief with the Moon alone, so Mercury there takes the rule with some force. The 10th has four significators between the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn, and with the load that thin it barely registers.

Neither of those is a problem a bead addresses. They are structural facts about a chart, and the useful thing a remedy can offer against a structural fact is a different relationship to it rather than its removal.

## Choosing a start date

Note that the rudraksha screen is the narrowest of the twelve activities we measured across 2026, with only 30 qualifying days in the year against 78 for namkaran at the other end. The reason is that it screens on two weekdays rather than one, and a weekday is worth roughly 21 days a year against a typical star list, which makes it the largest single lever in any muhurat rule.

## A consequence of Mercury and Jupiter owning all four dual signs

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are the four dual signs, and Mercury owns two of them while Jupiter owns the other two. That has an effect on dual ascendants which is easy to state and rarely mentioned.

On a dual ascendant the four angles have two lords instead of four, and those two are always Budha and Guru. Every other rising sign spreads its angles across four different owners. So a Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces chart concentrates the angular houses in the hands of the two grahas that can never be yogakaraka for anyone.

It also means Kendradhipati Dosha, which attaches to a natural benefic owning two angles, applies to Jupiter for four ascendants and to Mercury for two, while never applying to Mars at all. The gentle grahas pick up a difficulty the hard ones structurally cannot.

None of that is changed by a bead. Useful to know because it explains why Mercury remedies come up as often as they do on dual ascendants, which is a quarter of all charts before any other consideration.
