# 3 Mukhi Rudraksha: Mars, Tuesday, and a Pattern Holding

> By the third bead the pattern is unmistakable, and it explains why a bead reaches Mars without the argument a red coral needs.

A 3 mukhi rudraksha belongs to Mars. By the third bead the pattern behind these attributions is impossible to miss: the mukhi number is the graha's position in the navagraha sequence, and Mars is third.

Sun, Moon, Mars. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. The bead order and the weekday order are the same order, because the seven day week is built out of the same seven grahas in the same arrangement.

## Mars is where the two remedy systems diverge most visibly

Most people come to a Mars remedy because of anger, conflict, accidents, or a Manglik reading. Which makes Mars the clearest case for a distinction that runs through this whole subject.

A [red coral](https://mahadasha.com/red-coral-gemstone) strengthens Mars. It asks Mars to do more of what it already does. If the presenting complaint is that Mars is doing too much, that is the wrong direction, and no amount of good intention turns the instrument around.

Coral is also restricted. It is licensed for Cancer, Leo and Pisces rising, and for the first two Mars is a yogakaraka, the strongest classification the system produces. It is refused for Taurus, Gemini and Virgo, where Mars owns difficult houses and no trine. Gemini is the sharpest of those, since Mars owns the 6th there outright.

The bead carries neither property. It has no ascendant test, because being third in a list does not require owning a house. And it is not a strengthening instruction in the way a stone is.

## What Mangal Dosha actually is, and what it is not

The other reason people arrive here, and it is worth separating from both instruments.

The dosha depends on which house Mars occupies, not which it owns: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th. That is half the chart, which is why the condition is far commoner than its reputation implies.

The list is derivable rather than arbitrary. Houses 1, 4, 7 and 12 all reach the 7th house one way or another, counting Mars's special eighth aspect from the 12th. The other two are counted from the 7th itself: the 2nd house is the 8th from the 7th, and the 8th house is the 2nd from the 7th. Both are marakas for the spouse rather than for the native.

The 2nd house case is genuinely disputed, incidentally. Parashara's basis is the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, and the 2nd is a later addition. [The dosha page](https://mahadasha.com/mangal-dosha) covers what cancels it, and none of the cancellations involve buying anything.

## A partition worth carrying

Two separate lists attach to Mars and they share not a single house. On one side sit the six that make a chart Manglik: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th. On the other the four upachaya houses, where Mars is held to improve with age: the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th.

Between them that is ten of the twelve, with no overlap at all. The 5th and the 9th are the only two houses carrying neither label, which is a tidier structure than either list suggests on its own.

One more structural point. Aries and Scorpio are seven signs apart and no two angles in a chart are ever separated by seven, so no ascendant can hand Mars a pair of them. The dosha that attaches to a natural benefic holding two angles therefore never reaches Mars at all, while Jupiter collects it on four ascendants.

## Where a red coral does have the stronger case

Worth being even-handed, because for two ascendants the stone is not the weaker instrument at all.

Cancer rising puts Mars on the 5th and 10th, and Leo rising on the 4th and 9th. In both cases Mars owns an angle and a trine at once, which makes it a yogakaraka, the strongest classification the system produces and one only Mars, Venus and Saturn ever reach.

Only 6 of the 12 ascendants have a yogakaraka at all, so the flat prediction is 50.00%, and across 12,000 real charts we measured 50.04%. That is the closest agreement between an arithmetic prediction and a measurement anywhere in this wave, which is unsurprising once you notice there is no astronomy in the question: the answer depends only on which sign was rising.

Cancer rising has a further wrinkle. Cancer is the sign of Mars's debilitation, so a Cancer ascendant with Mars in the 1st house has a yogakaraka sitting in its own fall. The licensing table says yes and the strength reading says the graha is at its weakest, and for once both point toward doing something rather than away from it.

## Agni, and the deity layer

The 3 mukhi is attributed to Agni, the fire, and the association with burning off accumulated karma is the standard claim made for it.

That is a deity-layer claim rather than a planetary one, and the two layers are separate systems that only sometimes agree. Bead 2 sits at the Moon's position and is named for Ardhanarishvara, a form made of two, which matches its face count by coincidence. Bead 7 sits at Saturn's position and is named for Mahalakshmi, which matches nothing. Worth knowing which layer an argument is coming from.

## Timing, if you want to be precise about it

Tuesday is Mars's weekday and its first hora opens at sunrise, since the first hora of any day belongs to that day's lord. Mars owns four windows that Tuesday and they total exactly 240 minutes, as every graha's own horas do on its own day, two by daylight and two after dark.

Across a week Mars gets 24 of the 168 horas, which is 14.29% of all time. So the "own hora" instruction is far less restrictive than it sounds, and the [rudraksha muhurat](https://mahadasha.com/muhurat-calculator/rudraksha) tool will pick a full date rather than just a window if you want the stricter version.

A Mars mahadasha is 7 of the 120 years in the cycle, tied with Ketu for the shortest. The [Mangal mantra](https://mahadasha.com/mangal-mantra) asks 10,000 repetitions against it, which works out at 1,429 a year of period, the second steepest rate of the nine.

## Mars in the panchang, and one useful window

If you are picking a Tuesday to begin, two almanac facts are worth knowing.

Mars is one of the four grahas whose weekday carries a named inauspicious window in the choghadiya scheme, since the quality labels there are exactly the benefic and malefic split of the seven: Moon, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus good, Sun, Saturn and Mars bad. Eight slots dealt from a seven lord cycle means every day opens and closes on the same quality, and 64 of a week's 112 daytime and night-time slots come out auspicious.

The other is Rahu Kaal, which on a Tuesday falls in the afternoon and is the most widely observed avoidance window in Indian practice. It is worth noting that it runs 77 to 104 minutes at Delhi across the year rather than a flat 90, because it is an eighth of the daylight and the daylight changes. Our [Rahu Kaal](https://mahadasha.com/rahu-kaal-timing) write-up covers why it is the one window of the three that cannot be derived from the hora sequence.

## Frequently asked questions about the 3 mukhi rudraksha

### Which planet does the 3 mukhi rudraksha belong to?

Mars, because Mars is third in the navagraha sequence and beads one to nine follow that order without exception.

### Which day should it be worn?

Tuesday, which is Mars's weekday. The bead order and the weekday order coincide for the first seven beads because the week is built from the same seven grahas in the same sequence.

### Is it a remedy for Mangal Dosha?

Propitiatory remedies are the traditional response, and the bead carries no ascendant restriction, so it is at least available to everyone. But the dosha depends on which house Mars occupies and it is present in roughly half of all charts from the ascendant alone, so the cancellation conditions matter more than any instrument.

### Should I wear this or a red coral?

They point in different directions. Coral strengthens Mars and is refused for Taurus, Gemini and Virgo rising. If the concern is that Mars is already too loud, a strengthening remedy is the wrong instrument regardless of your ascendant.

### What is the Agni association about?

It is the deity attribution for this bead, distinct from the planetary one. The two layers agree at some positions and diverge at others, most obviously at bead 7, which sits at Saturn's position and is named for Mahalakshmi.
