# The 27 Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology: Lords, Padas and Meaning

> A working guide to the 27 nakshatras in Vedic astrology: what each one is, how the 108 padas are derived, and why the birth star decides which dasha a life opens in.

# The 27 Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology: Lords, Padas and Meaning

The 27 nakshatras in Vedic astrology are the oldest coordinate system in the tradition, older than the twelve signs. Each one is an arc of exactly 13°20', and twenty-seven of them close the 360° circle with nothing left over. Where a rashi tells you the broad territory a planet occupies, the nakshatra tells you the room inside it. That resolution is why a birth star, not a Sun sign, is what an Indian family asks for first.

This page is the map. Every nakshatra below carries its degrees, its ruling planet, its presiding deity and its four padas, and each has its own page with the padas read out in full.

## What a nakshatra actually is

Take the Moon's journey. It circles the zodiac in roughly 27.3 days, so it covers a little under one-twenty-seventh of the sky per day. The ancient astronomers named the star group the Moon slept beside on each of those nights. That is all a nakshatra originally was: a night's lodging.

The names survive the astronomy. Rohini is Aldebaran, the red eye of Taurus. Chitra is Spica. Jyeshtha is Antares. Ardra is Betelgeuse. When you read that someone was born under Ardra, they were born when the Moon stood near the shoulder of Orion, and you can walk outside and find it.

Two things then got formalised. The arcs were made equal at 13°20' each, so the system could be calculated rather than observed. And each arc was quartered.

## How the 27 nakshatras in Vedic astrology divide the sky

Each quarter is a **pada**, meaning foot or step. A pada is 3°20', and there are 108 of them around the zodiac. That number is not a coincidence and it is not mystical numerology either. It falls out of the arithmetic: 27 × 4 = 108, and 360° ÷ 108 = 3°20'.

Here is the part most introductions skip. A pada is not merely similar to a navamsa. It *is* one. The [Navamsa chart (D9)](https://mahadasha.com/navamsa-chart-d9) cuts every sign into nine parts of 3°20', giving 108 divisions around the zodiac, and those divisions fall on exactly the same boundaries as the padas. Same lines, two names, depending on whether you are counting from the nakshatra or from the sign.

That equivalence has a practical payoff. If you know a planet's pada, you know its navamsa sign without casting a second chart. Run the [Navamsa calculator](https://mahadasha.com/navamsa-calculator) and the D9 positions it returns are your pada positions in different clothing.

## The pada arithmetic that decides everything

Number the nakshatras from zero, Ashwini through Revati. For nakshatra *k*, pada *P* lands in the sign at position (4*k* + *P* − 1) around the zodiac, counting from Aries. Two consequences follow, and both are worth holding on to.

**The pada number alone fixes the element.** Because 4 divides 4*k* cleanly, the element depends only on *P*. Pada 1 is always a fire navamsa, pada 2 always earth, pada 3 always air, pada 4 always water. All twenty-seven nakshatras, no exceptions. A fourth pada anywhere in the zodiac carries water, whether it belongs to Ashwini or to Revati.

**There are only three distinct pada-sign sets in the entire zodiac,** and each is shared by exactly nine nakshatras. Nine of them run Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer. Nine run Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio. Nine run Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. That last group is the odd one, because Sagittarius and Pisces are both Jupiter's and Capricorn and Aquarius are both Saturn's. Those nine nakshatras have only two pada lords between four padas, arranged as a mirror.

## Why your birth star sets your first dasha

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, and the nine rulers repeat three times in a fixed order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Ashwini is Ketu's, Bharani is Venus's, Krittika is the Sun's, and so on to Revati, which returns to Mercury.

This is the engine of the [Vimshottari dasha](https://mahadasha.com/dasha-calculator) . The lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth is the lord of the first mahadasha, and how far the Moon had travelled through that arc decides how much of that period was already spent before the first breath. Someone born with the Moon at the very start of Pushya gets the full nineteen years of Saturn. Someone born near its end may get a few months.

The nine periods run 7, 20, 6, 10, 7, 18, 16, 19 and 17 years for Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. They total 120. That is why the whole system is called Vimshottari, from *vimshottara*, a hundred and twenty.

## The three classifications that do real work

Nakshatras carry a long list of attributes, and most of them sit unused. Three earn their place.

**Gana** sorts them into Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa temperaments (gentle, self-interested, forceful), nine of each. **Yoni** assigns each an animal, and pairs of animals are ranked from friendly to hostile. **Nadi** splits them into Adi, Madhya and Antya, again nine each. All three feed [Ashtakoota matching](https://mahadasha.com/kundali-matching-guide) , where [Nadi alone carries eight of the thirty-six points](https://mahadasha.com/nadi-koota-matching) .

The fourth classification worth knowing is the activity type used in muhurat: Chara for travel, Sthira for foundations, Ugra for demolition, Mridu for art and friendship, Tikshna for surgery and cutting ties, Kshipra for trade, Mishra for routine. Election astrology runs on this list.

## The seams nobody warns you about

Three points in the zodiac are junctions where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins: Pisces into Aries, Cancer into Leo, Scorpio into Sagittarius. The last pada before each seam and the first pada after it are called **gandanta**, the knot at the end.

Six nakshatras carry it. Revati's fourth pada and Ashwini's first. Ashlesha's fourth and Magha's first. Jyeshtha's fourth and Mula's first. Classical texts treat a Moon there as a difficult birth, and the honest reading is that these are transition points, where one element has finished and the next has not started. Six padas out of a hundred and eight is not many, but the texts single them out for a reason.

## How to actually use this

Find your Moon's nakshatra and pada first. The [birth chart calculator](https://mahadasha.com/birth-chart-calculator) reports both. That single line tells you your gana, your yoni, your nadi, which mahadasha your life opened in, and which navamsa sign your Moon occupies.

Then read the same for your ascendant, and for whichever planet is running its dasha. A nakshatra reading of the Sun explains something different from a nakshatra reading of the Moon, and both are more specific than the sign alone.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many of the 27 nakshatras in Vedic astrology are there really, 27 or 28?

Twenty-seven are used for calculation. A twenty-eighth, Abhijit, is named in the classical texts and occupies 6°40' to 10°53'20" of Capricorn, overlapping the end of Uttara Ashadha and the start of Shravana. It is kept for certain muhurat purposes but excluded from dasha and matching, because 28 would not divide the circle evenly.

### What is the difference between a nakshatra and a rashi?

A rashi is 30°, a nakshatra is 13°20'. There are twelve of one and twenty-seven of the other, so they do not nest. Nine nakshatras straddle a sign boundary, with padas falling in two different rashis. The rashi gives the broad character of a placement; the nakshatra gives the specific one.

### Which matters more, my Sun sign or my birth star?

In Vedic practice the Moon's nakshatra does more work than either. Predictions run on the Moon, matching runs on the Moon's nakshatra, and the dasha sequence is set by it. A Sun sign is a Western convention and carries little weight here.

### Can my nakshatra pada change if my birth time is slightly wrong?

Easily. The Moon covers 3°20' in roughly six and a half hours, so an error of a few hours can move the pada, and near a boundary even a few minutes can. If the pada matters for a decision, the birth time needs to be right first.
